Upkeep for Osmo, Oil, and Polyurethane Finishes

Thank you for choosing Urban Slab & Timber! Your live edge table is crafted to bring out the natural beauty of wood. To help you keep it in great shape, follow these care tips specific to the type of finish on your table.

1. Dusting

  • Frequency: Daily or as needed
  • Use a soft, dry microfiber cloth to dust your table. Regular dusting prevents scratches and helps keep the wood looking vibrant.

2. Wiping

  • Frequency: Once a week or as needed
  • Lightly dampen a cloth with water to wipe the surface. Avoid excess water, as it can damage the finish and the wood over time.
  • For Osmo & Oil Finishes: Avoid chemical cleaners that may strip the finish. Use a mild soap solution (1 drop of mild dish soap in a quart of water) for tougher spots, followed by a clean, damp cloth to remove residue.
  • For Polyurethane Finishes: Polyurethane provides a sealed surface, so you can use a slightly stronger mix (up to 2 drops of mild soap per quart of water), but avoid harsh chemicals that could dull the finish.

Refreshing the Finish

  • Frequency: Every 3-6 months or as needed (Dry or chemical exposure)
  • For Osmo Finish: Apply a pea-sized amount of Osmo Liquid Wax Cleaner on a clean, lint-free cloth. Buff lightly, focusing on high-use areas. Let dry for 30 minutes before use.
  • For Oil Finish: Lightly oil the surface with a food-safe mineral oil, tung oil or Odie’s Oil, using about 5-10ml per square meter. Apply in the direction of the grain, let sit for 5 minutes, then wipe off excess with a soft cloth. Allow to dry for 8-10 hours.
  • For Polyurethane Finish: A quick wipe-down with a slightly damp cloth should be sufficient. Avoid additional products, as polyurethane seals the wood and does not require conditioning.

1. Reapplying Finish

  • Frequency: As needed for high-traffic tables
  • For Osmo and Oil Finishes: Lightly sand with 400-grit sandpaper if necessary. Reapply Osmo TopOil or tung oil to rejuvenate the table’s appearance and add durability. Follow the product’s instructions for the amount and drying time.
  • For Polyurethane Finish: If the polyurethane finish has worn, lightly sand the affected area and apply a new coat of polyurethane, following the manufacturer’s instructions.

2. Water Rings & Minor Marks

  • Frequency: Monthly inspection
  • Tip for Water Rings (All Finishes): Mix equal parts olive oil and white vinegar (1 teaspoon of each is usually enough). Dip a soft cloth in the mixture and rub it gently on the water ring in circular motions. Wipe with a clean, dry cloth afterward.
  • For Osmo and Oil Finishes: For minor scratches, buff with a soft cloth and a small amount of Osmo Liquid Wax Cleaner or an appropriate wood cleaner to help blend marks into the finish.
  • For Polyurethane Finishes: Lightly buff scratches with a cloth and a polyurethane-safe polish.

  • Coasters & Placemats: Use coasters under drinks and placemats under hot or cold items to avoid water rings and heat marks. Ensure the surface is dried before replacing objects.
  • Placement: Keep your table out of direct sunlight to prevent fading, and avoid placing it near heat sources.
  • Humidity Control: Keep indoor humidity between 35-55%. Low humidity can cause cracking, while high humidity can lead to swelling. A dehumidifier or humidifier can help maintain this balance.
