Applying Osmo Wood Finishes

At Urban Slab & Timber in Omaha, Nebraska, we recommend using Osmo Polyx®-Oil to enhance and protect your live edge wood surfaces. With these step-by-step application methods, you can achieve a lasting, natural finish that preserves the character of each piece.

It is a top-rated wood finish that combines oil and wax to protect and enhance wooden surfaces. Whether you’re finishing a new wooden project or maintaining an existing one, applying Osmo Polyx-Oil correctly is key to achieving a beautiful, durable finish. This step-by-step guide will help you apply Osmo Polyx-Oil like a pro, ensuring optimal results.

Using fleece applicator pads is a simple, effective way to apply Osmo finishes with minimal risk of overuse.

  1. Prepare the Oil: Stir the Polyx®-Oil well, then pour it into a tray.
  2. Apply to the Wood: Dip the fleece applicator pad into the oil, then apply it thinly and evenly across the wood surface in a circular or figure-eight motion.
  3. Let it Sit: Allow the finish to rest on the wood for about 5 minutes to absorb fully.
  4. Drying Time: Allow 8-10 hours for the first coat to dry. Ensure good airflow for optimal drying.
  5. Second Coat: Repeat the previous steps for a second, thin coat for added protection and durability.

For a smooth, even application, non-abrasive Scotchbrite pads work well with Osmo oils on live edge wood.

  1. Stir and Pour: Stir the Polyx®-Oil thoroughly and pour into a tray.
  2. Apply the Finish: Use a non-abrasive white Scotchbrite pad to spread the oil thinly and evenly, moving in a circular or figure-eight motion.
  3. Polish for Smoothness: After application, use a fresh pad to lightly polish the wood, removing any visible marks or excess product.
  4. Drying Time: Let the wood dry for 8-10 hours, ensuring proper ventilation.
  5. Repeat: Follow the same steps for a second coat, allowing the finish to penetrate for the best results.

For a more hand-rubbed look on live edge wood, applying with a lint-free microfiber cloth offers control over the finish.

  1. Stir and Apply: Stir the Polyx®-Oil thoroughly and apply it to the wood in a figure-eight or circular motion.
  2. Allow to Penetrate: Let the oil sit for about 15 minutes before removing excess with the grain.
  3. Drying Time: Wait 8-10 hours for the first coat to dry before applying the second and third coats, repeating the same steps.

⚠️ Safety Note: Saturated cloths pose a risk of spontaneous combustion. Ensure cloths are spread out to dry completely before disposal or stored in a fire-safe container.

For larger surfaces like live edge tables or floors, an Osmo Floor Brush or Roller can provide even coverage.

  1. Stir the Oil: Stir the Polyx®-Oil well before applying.
  2. First Coat: Use a brush or roller to apply a thin, even coat across the surface. Avoid removing excess product, as it will naturally absorb during drying.
  3. Drying Time: Allow the wood to dry for 8-10 hours.
  4. Second Coat: Apply a second, thin layer with a brush or roller. Let it penetrate for 5-10 minutes.
  5. Optional Third Coat: Highly absorbent woods may need a third coat. For questions, contact Osmo support at 1-844-OSMOCAN.

For a subtle tint, mix Osmo Wood Wax Finish with Polyx®-Oil at a ratio of 10:1. Example: For a neutral, raw wood look, add a 3% ratio of 3111 White Wood Wax Finish for the base coat, followed by a clear coat of Polyx®-Oil.

Osmo Hardwax-Oil requires up to 2 weeks to fully cure. During this time, avoid damp-mopping or placing rugs on the surface to ensure the finish sets well.

This guide is designed to help you apply Osmo finishes to live edge wood pieces for lasting beauty and protection. For more tips and resources, visit Urban Slab & Timber’s Omaha store or contact us directly.
